Amalgam has been used as cavity fillings for over a hundred years for better and for worse. Because of its disadvantages amalgam is now banned for use in Sweden as a filling material. Alternative materials now in use are porcelain and composite.

Large amalgam fillings expand by means of oxidation processes to such a great extent that the walls of the teeth are fractured.

Metal ions from the amalgam meander into the tooth and discolor its surface and make it gray.
